Abstract

Key Messages: • Elevated citrate levels increase hepcidin mRNA expression in primary hepatocytes. • Citrate treatment in primary hepatocytes activates hepcidin expression. • Intravenous injection of citrate in mice increases hepcidin mRNA levels. • The hepcidin response to citrate involves the BMP/SMAD signaling pathway.
