Abstract

Infectious diseases are a major threat to the survival and development of humanity around the world. Timely and accurate diagnosis is proved to be an essential prerequisite for the prevention and containment of infectious diseases prevalence. Nucleic acid based techniques are the most common used methods for the detection of infectious pathogens, and demonstrate a great potential for developing highly reliable, sensitive and specific diagnostic platforms for on-site pathogens detection. This review focused on some of the most promising nucleic acid testing techniques and commercial devices for the on-site detection of infectious pathogens. Additionally, some emerging technologies that may contribute to the development of robust and reliable diagnostic instruments for infectious pathogens detection have been presented. Finally, personal perspectives with respect to the future trends of diagnostic techniques were given.
