The GABA receptor agonists, GABA and muscimol, increased, while the GABA receptor antagonist, (+)-bicuculline, decreased the affinity of the benzodiazepine receptor for 3H-diazepam. The effect was seen at both 0 and 25 degrees C in spite of a large difference of affinity for 3H-diazepam at the two temperatures.
