The Incidence of Echinococcus Infection in Dogs, Sheep and Goats Slaughtered in Ibadan, Nigeria

Abstract

An investigation was conducted to determine the incidence of Echinococcus infection among dogs and slaughtered sheep and goats in Ibadan Municipality. Of 102 dogs examined, forty-nine (48%) had Echinococcus-like ova. Parasite eggs from four (3.9%) of these animals produced Echinococcus larvae when cultured while twenty (19.6%) of the faecal samples had proglottides. Two hundred and fifteen sheep and goats were examined at four different abattoirs. Only 28% had hydatid cysts.
